Big Island Coffee – A Great Way to Start the Morning

Big Island Coffee – A Great Way to Start the Morning

I grew up on a coffee farm in Kona. As a teenager, I’d pick coffee and my dad would pay me $7 for a big bag. That was enough to fill my little Toyota Corolla with gas! Times may have changed, but when we talk about Hawaii-grown coffee many people still think of Kona beans like those I harvested. Here’s a surprise, though. Locals will tell you that coffee on the Big Island has roots in the Paauilo area. The beans that started in this little community along the Hamakua Coast eventually made their way to Kona, becoming the famed Kona coffee bean. According to the folks at Daily Fix Coffee: In 1892 Hermann Widemann introduced the first Guatemalan variety. He gave seeds to John Horner, who planted an orchard of 800 trees in Hamakua, on the northeastern side of the island. Kona coffee is celebrated at the annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival every November here on the Big...

Hawaii 5.0 Real Estate Convention

Hawaii 5.0 Real Estate Convention

Much as I love the Big Island, it was a treat to spend a weekend in Honolulu at the Hawaii 5.0 Real Estate Convention hosted by the Hawaii Association of Realtors. It was a fun chance to catch up with other agents from all over the state and attend educational sessions. The inspiring keynote speaker for the event, Darryl Davis, was a professional actor appearing in movies and commercials before becoming a top producing agent averaging six transactions a month. I also had the opportunity to say hello to Big Island Realtor Brian Thomas. In a “Hawaii is such a small world” moment, Brian’s son (also Brian Thomas) and I went to Punahou School and graduated together in 1980. As if that wasn’t enough fun, I was grand prize convention winner of the Passport Book Networking Contest. My prize? A one-week stay at the fabulous Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. I’m on Facebook! Join me there for news...
